The frustrating year came to a head in September at Richmond when Gordon failed to make the "Chase for the Championship." The Hendrick Motorsports team quickly went into "2006 mode," as Gordon would call it, and replaced crew chief Robbie Loomis, who left for Petty Enterprises, with young Steve Letarte.

Loomis Leads Gordon to Amazing Comeback, Wins Wypall Wipers Crew Chief of the Race: #24-Jeff Gordon recorded one of the most stellar comebacks in NASCAR history this weekend at Martinsville Speedway. Along with crew chief Robbie Loomis, Gordon turned a three-lap deficit into a win for the Rainbow Warriors. For leading his team to victory lane, Loomis won Wypall Wipers Crew Chief of the Race honors.

Due to a failed morning inspection, Gordon will not be allowed to practice or qualify on Friday. Gordon has to pass inspection on Friday to be eligible to practice on Saturday. As of this weekend, crew chief Steve Letarte has not been suspended, but additional penalties could coming later this week.
