Special Schemes for #24 at Talladega & Atlanta: #24-Jeff Gordon is scheduled to run a DuPont/Pepsi special COT paint scheme in the October 7, 2007 race at Talladega Superspeedway. Jeff Gordon attended the awards ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City for his top-10 finish in the NEXTEL Cup Standings. While there he collected a check for his 2006 winnings of $7,471,447 which brings his career winnings total to $82,838,526.

When there were no opportunities available in open-wheel racing for Jeff to pursue, someone suggested that he try out the Buck Baker Driving School at Rockingham Speedway in North Carolina. When Jeff drove his first laps in a stock car, he declared to his parents that this was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. What exciting times those were. It was a transition from the traditional open-wheel racing that Jeff was used to, something he had never done before—race a car that had fenders. Jeff met a man named Hugh Connerty, who owned some Hooters restaurants and was a partner in Outback Steakhouse. Hugh secured some funding for a car through Outback, and it went to a test for the Busch Grand National race in Charlotte in 1990.

UPDATE: "I don't necessarily say they bent the rules," [Team Owner Rick] Hendrick said after a lengthy team meeting inside of Jeff Gordon's hauler. "They thought they were working inside of an area they thought they could. The fenders on the car are sitting out there in front of God and everybody. If you're going to try to do something to gain an advantage you wouldn't do it and roll it through inspection." NASCAR officials said the front right fenders on both cars were flared out beyond the wheel well to create an advantage. Robin Pemberton, NASCAR's vice president of competition, called it a blatant attempt to circumvent the rules.

Gordon ran a quick lap of 180.505 mph in the #24 Chevrolet. #99-Carl Edwards, #00-David Reutimann, #8-Mark Martin and #11-Denny Hamlin rounded out the rest of the top 5. #10A-Patrick Carpentier at 170.547 mph was the slowest of the 67 cars in this test. Carpentier was 52nd fastest in the #10B Dodge in the same session.
