Jean Seberg: Films

Josh Logan had optioned the film rights to Parrish and thought about Jean in the lead, but decided he wanted Jane Fonda and instead tested her in New York. He ... wanted another unknown, Warren Beatty, but abandoned the project to begin working instead on Tall Story, a movie for which he'd tested Brooke Hayward as a "family obligation," although Logan later said that Brooke had been "completely unmalleable." In other words, she couldn't act.

The DVD is pretty scant on other extras, though it has information about the film's restoration in 2000 by the BBC, specifies Web links to various Godard sites, and offers decent filmographies for Godard, Seberg, and Belmondo. Though there are still minor flaws with the print (aspect ratio 1.33:1), the BBC did great work, and the disc's claim that the film looks better than it ever has is credible. Sound quality and the English subtitle translation are ... very good. Godard fans might also want to check out the restored versions of Le Petit Soldat and Les Carabiniers, both also put out by Winstar and featuring commentary by Sterritt.

After their split, Gary continued to make her the subject of his work, most notably in the Costa-Gavras pic "Clair de Femme," based on Gary's novel, in which Romy Schneider's character is a suicidal, thinly veiled depiction of Seberg. The docu supposes she killed herself the same night she saw the film.
