The son of famed French actor Jean-Pierre Cassel, he first came to international attention starring as the thuggish gun-toting Vinz in the French skinhead flick, La Haine. The no-holds-barred portrayal of violent, disaffected youth didn't exactly paint a pretty picture of Paris, but won Cassel many fans as well as a nomination for best actor in the Césars, the French Oscars.

PARIS, April 20 (Agence France-Presse) — The French actor Jean-Pierre Cassel, who shot to fame as the star of film comedies by the director Philippe de Broca in the 1960s, died here on Thursday. He was 74.

Cassel always regretted that he missed meeting Astaire by a few minutes in New York. He had just left visiting Gene Kelly, who had seen him dancing in a St Germain nightclub in 1957, and had cast him in The Happy Road, when Astaire turned up at Kelly's. Cassel's break came in 1958, when he replaced Jean-Paul Belmondo on stage in the comedy Oscar. De Broca saw the show, and gave him the lead in Les Jeux de l'amour.
