Jean-Michel Jarre: Paris Opera
built 199 days ago
On 14 July 1979 Jean-Michel Jarre organised a spectacular concert at the Place de la Concorde in Paris. His gigantic sound-and-light extravaganza attracted a phenomenal crowd, over 1 million people flocking to watch Jarre perform. Later that year the French musician’s name would be inscribed in the Guinness Book of Records for having assembled the largest concert audience ever! Jean-Michel’s mega-concert at the Place de la Concorde was to be the first in a series of increasingly spectacular shows which the French musician would perform all over the world in the course of the next 20 years.

In 2003, Jarre released the album Geometry of Love for dance club VIP Lounge, in Paris, taking the 'inspired by the club generation' all the way. While Jarre's contemporary albums found themselves drawn to the pulsing rhythms of the dancefloor, Geometry of Love had its spiritual home in the chill-out room at the back, with lush, sprawling, sublime works washing over the listener.

This reached number 2 in the UK charts, signalling Jarre's arrival as a commercial force. The subsequent Equinoxe continued in familiar style, exploring the emotive power of orchestrated electronic rhythms and melody. The first of several massive open air performances took place in Paris at the Place De La Concorde, with a world record attendance of over one million. However, it was not until 1981 and the release of Magnetic Fields that Jarre undertook his first tour, no small task considering the amount of stage equipment required.
