The question to ask is what measures have been planned to save the unique Jaya Ganga which is a masterpiece of engineering acclaimed by the entire world from destruction, if the mining projects is approved? Has the cost estimate or plan for, its conservation and use been even thought out by the proposed miners ?

Jaya Ganga sailed out on its cinematic journey from the shores of literary acclaim. The book described as "a novel, an autobiographical travelogue, a reportage, a travel diary..." had been surprisingly well-received both in France and India. And the film has consolidated the rewards of that journey which started with a married woman who was visiting Vijay Singh in Paris, leaving a good-bye note to say: "My karma would be fulfilled if I could spend three days on the Ganga with you..."

Singh is hoping that his new work will match the success of his last film, Jaya Ganga, which portrayed a Paris-based novelist who goes home to India in search of a lost love. It received extraordinarily positive reviews despite its small release. The Guardian described it as "mesmerising", an "elegant and beautifully photographed novella of a film" and "one of the most authentic descriptions of everyday Indian magic ever screened". Jonathan Ross said in his BBC review: "It's so refreshing when a gifted film-maker introduces you to a new, intoxicating world that it's a pity if his film procures only the tiniest release." But the film's fame escalated by word of mouth; unpromoted and scheduled for limited showing in France, it ended up running for 49 weeks in Paris cinemas.

His first feature film was the much admired Jaya Ganga which Singh adapted from his book about a young Indian writer living in Paris who travels to the River Ganges in search of a mysterious woman. It ran for over 49 weeks on Paris screens before going on to play in 80 cinemas in the UK. It was ... shown in several festivals, often in the competition category.

Passionate about words, ideas and cinema, Singh is not so excited about the promotional aspect of his work, and that's one reason most people in the United States have not seen Jaya Ganga at all or read the book. Recently the director was in New York for a private screening of the film and to distribute the movie in this country, as well as raise funding for his next film.

The project could destroy the area, which includes the ancient 54-km Jaya Ganga canal, listed by the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization as a World Heritage site, and will threaten more than 12,000 residents with forced relocation.
