Jay Mohr won’t be back to fling his barbs and witticisms at Friday’s Nextel Cup Awards Ceremony, but there will be someone filling that role. David Spade will this year’s “featured performer,” which is curious since he now stars on a CBS comedy called “Rules of Engagement” even though CBS is not involved in NASCAR coverage in any way. The musical performer this year will, predictably, be Kelly Clarkson. Clarkson has become the unofficial Official Pop Songstress of NASCAR after performing at the 2007 Daytona 500 and taking part in an advertising campaign for the sport this year.Jerry Punch will serve as master of ceremonies. The banquet will be carried live on ESPN Classic with a replay beginning at 11:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

In high school, Jay Mohr was a wrestler and a cut-up, and after graduating he performed stand-up comedy. Unlike many struggling comics, Mohr was quickly able to make a living at it, and at 21 he moved to New York. Less than a year and a half after that, he was picked up for Saturday Night Live. During his time on SNL (1993-1995) Mohr did a drop-dead Christopher Walken, a pretty good Sean Penn, and admitted plagiarizing a sketch that aired, about an Irish bartender.

An exceptionally versatile talent, Jay Mohr began his career as a teenager and has moved easily between stand-up comedy, film, television and radio. From 1993 - 1995 he was a regular on "Saturday Night Live" where he first gained national attention for his spot-on impersonations of celebrities including Christopher Walken and Sean Penn. His "Saturday Night Live" tenure was followed by his breakthrough performance as an underhanded sports agent in Cameron Crowe's 1996 Academy Award-winner Jerry Maguire. Mohr's subsequent film credits include the upcoming family comedy Are We There Yet?, with Ice Cube; the independent romantic comedy Seeing Other People; the futuristic fable Simone, with Al Pacino; Doug Liman's dark comedy Go; and the drama Pay It Forward, with Kevin Spacey. On television, he starred in the critically adored satiric series "Action," and has guest starred on "The West Wing," "CSI Miami" and "Scrubs." In addition, Mohr has created, produced and hosted programs for television, including the popular series "Last Comic Standing," which garnered him a 2004 Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Reality- Competition Program; and the weekly sports/comedy/variety show "Mohr Sports" on ESPN. An ardent sports fan, he hosted Fox's "NFL This Morning" and often guest hosts Premiere Radio's Jim Rome Show, the number one syndicated sports radio program in the country.

Sci-fi novelist Bo Aikens (Jay Mohr) is fed up with life in Los Angeles. He heads out of the hustle and bustle of the big city to the small, idyllic town of Black River, where everyone is happy, contented and welcoming of strangers -- except for a burly redneck, but he'll be put straight soon enough. Not by Bo, but by an invisible force that rules the town. Troubled by various, peculiar Twilight Zone-ish twists of fate, Bo tries to leave Black River but finds he cannot -- at first because his car has been smashed into a cube, and later by deadly beams that rain from the sky. What's the sinister secret of Black River? Why is Bo being kept prisoner?

Mohr appeared as a featured player for the 1993-94 and 1994-95 seasons of Saturday Night Live. His 2004 autobiography, Gasping for Airtime: Two Years in the Trenches of Saturday Night Live (ISBN 1-4013-0006-5), details this tumultuous period of his life, including his battle with chronic panic attacks. Though his potential was appreciated by SNL creator/producer Lorne Michaels, Mohr was impatient with his progression to full cast member, and left the show on bad terms. He has since reconciled with Michaels.
