Jason Robards wuchs in New York und Los Angeles auf. Nach dem Abschluss der Hollywood High School diente er ab 1940 als Marineoffizier im Zweiten Weltkrieg und wurde für seine Tapferkeit mit dem Navy Cross ausgezeichnet.
