Jason Lee: Chasing Amy
built 284 days ago
Jason Lee is a hotheaded demon with an appetite for indoor air conditioning. Lee is best known for his two roles as the cynical sidekicks in Kevin Smith's "Mallrats" and then "Chasing Amy," for which Lee won an Independent Spirit Award.

After taking some minor acting roles, including the Jonze-directed Sonic Youth music video for "100%," in 1992 and a small part in Allison Anders' 1993 film Mi Vida Loca, Lee left professional skating for a full-time acting career. His first major movie role was in Kevin Smith's Mallrats which became a cult hit. He remained a close friend of Smith and has appeared in most of the director's works, including Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Jersey Girl and Clerks II. Lee won an Independent Spirit Award for his role in Chasing Amy as a comic book inker.

Lee's movie career began in earnest when he landed a lead role in Kevin Smith's Mallrats (1995) (at his very first audition, according to Smith). While the film was almost universally panned, Lee received high marks from critics and audiences for his turn as "cynical sidekick" Brodie Bruce. Smith was so pleased with Brodie that he wrote a part for Lee in his next film, Chasing Amy (1997): Ben Affleck's cranky roommate and comic book partner Banky. Lee won an Independent Spirit Award for his performance.

Lee developed a love for the camera after appearing in several skateboard-centric music videos, including the Spike Jonze-directed 100% by Sonic Youth. In 1993, he joined Jonze for his film debut in Mi vida loca. Two years later, Lee had his very first audition, and director Kevin Smith signed him on as an important supporting character in Mallrats. Smith liked Lee so much that he called him back for Chasing Amy in 1997.

To call it an "evening" with Lee is something of an overstatement; Lee himself didn't show up until 11:30 p.m. The event started at 9:30 on June 17, 2001 with a showing of Chasing Amy, which was of course well-received. There's nothing like a two-hour introduction via film to get a crowd warmed up.

Along with appearing in five of Kevin Smith's six films ("Mallrats," "Chasing Amy," "Dogma," "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back," "Jersey Girl"), Jason has ... starred in "Almost Famous" and "The Incredibles." But not just everything Jason touches turns to gold. You only need look to movies like "Big Trouble" and "Stealing Harvard" for evidence of that.
