Before the 5th century, the Japanese had no writing system of their own. They began to adopt the Chinese writing script along with many other aspects of Chinese culture after their introduction by Korean monks and scholars during the 5th and 6th centuries AD.

Before the 4th century AD, the Japanese had no writing system of their own. During the 4th century they began to import and adapt the Chinese script, along with many other aspects of Chinese culture, probably via Korea.

The Japanese took over the ideograms, or kanji - Japanese Symbols, between the fourth and seventh centuries. At first used strictly in classical Chinese texts, the kanji were later adapted to Japanese as well.
