In 1986, Janet Jackson exploded on the international pop music scene, enlisting Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis to help her gain Control. As a child and teen actress, she acted in a variety of sitcoms and TV dramas. Her dad managed her, and her first two albums, recorded in the early Eighties, reflected other people's vision of whom she should be.

In 1997, Jackson released "The Velvet Rope". Sonically, it was much more adventurous than previous albums, featuring tinges of Euro-trance and jungle alongside the familiar pop and funk tracks. Jackson's first release "Got 'til It's Gone" would not become an official release, although it was received quite favorably at radio. The second single "Together Again", dedicated to friends who had died of AIDS, was a worldwide smash and has become an anthem for many Jackson fans. The following single "I Get Lonely" became another Top 5 hit for Janet. The remix version featuring R&B group Blackstreet would end up reaching the #1 spot on the R&B charts. Two additional tracks were released to radio, one, "Go Deep" becoming a favorite.

Janet Jackson says employers should plan for a massive surge in maternity leave after she unleashes her forthcoming album Discipline, "because her music is the ultimate aphrodisiac." If Janet really wants to her record to be responsible for a "baby boom"--way to ignore the overpopulation problem, lady--she might want to a.) get people to start buying Janet Jackson records again meaning b.) she might want to stop trying to turn potential listeners on by talking about her "heavy flow." Janet-Jackson-Jermaine-Dupri.jpg In 1984, Jackson, then 18, released her second album, titled Dream Street. It marked a musical progression from her debut, with funkier, up-tempo production by brother Marlon and famed disco producer Giorgio Moroder, producer of songs for artists such as Donna Summer. The album failed to make the top one hundred of the Billboard pop album charts but did reach number nineteen on the R&B chart. Though Dream Street scored a Top 10 R&B hit with “Don’t Stand Another Chance”, sales of Dream Street were about half of her debut’s. Critics soon began to dismiss Jackson’s career as a pop star.

Next, Jackson secured a contract with A&M Records, and in 1982, while still managed and creatively guided by her father, she released a forgettable debut album, Janet Jackson. The album did yield a #6 R&B single, “Young Love.” Another TV role, on the series Fame, followed, as did another unremarkable album, 1984’s Dream Street, and another R&B hit, “Don’t Stand Another Chance” (#9). Also in 1984, at the age of 18, Jackson defied her family by marrying singer James DeBarge, whose fledgling R&B sibling act DeBarge was being hyped as a successor to the Jacksons. The marriage was annulled after less than a year; but the seeds of Jackson’s independence from the family dynasty, and her father in particular, were firmly planted.
