Jane Wyman was born Sarah Jane Mayfield on January 5, 1917, in St. Joseph, Missouri (she was ... known later as Sarah Jane Fulks). When she was only eight years old, and after her parents filed for divorce, she lost her father prematurely. After graduating high school she attempted, with the help of her mother, to break into films, but to no avail. In 1932, after attending the University of Missouri, she began a career as a radio singer, which led to her first name change to Jane Durrell. In 1936 she signed a contract with Warner Bros. Pictures and that led to another name change, the more familiar one of Jane Wyman.

Born Sarah Jane Mayfield in St. Joseph, Missouri, she later took the name Sarah Jane Fulks in honor of the neighbor family who "unoficially adopted" her after her parents divorced. In 1928, she and her mother moved to Southern California, where her mother, Le Jerne Pichelle, tried to start her own acting career. When that was unsuccsessful, she turned to her daughter as a surrogate, but neither was able to move Hollywood. The two moved back to Missouri, where Sarah Jane attended college, but in 1930 she began a radio singing career, calling herself Jane Durrell.

From All Movie Guide: Born Sarah Jane Fulks, Jane Wyman tried to break into films as a child but was unsuccessful despite encouragement from her mother. A decade later, she began her show business career as a radio singer, using the name Jane Durrell. In 1936, she began appearing in films as a chorus girl and bit player. Eventually, she moved into secondary roles and occasional leads, usually playing brassy blondes in comic relief. She broke out of this mold with her performance in The Lost Weekend (1945), in which she demonstrated her talents as a serious actress; this led to better roles as a major star. For her work in The Yearling (1946), she received a Best Actress Oscar nomination, then won an Oscar for her portrayal of a deaf-mute rape victim in Johnny Belinda (1948).

Jane Wyman, whose acting credits include more than forty movies, a starring role on Falcon Crest, and several awards, passed away at age ninety-three on Monday. She passed away at her home in Palm Springs. The Wyman-Reagan marriage ended the same year the actress won the Oscar for her role in Johnny Belinda, and Jane remained close-mouthed to the press after Reagan became the President. She told reporters it was bad taste to talk about ex-husbands and wives, and at Reagan’s passing in 2004 said he was a “great, kind and gentle man.” Together, the couple had three children – one that did not survive, and one they jointly adopted. Wyman retreated from the public view after her nearly decade-long stint with Falcon Crest was over, putting a cap on her forty years in the entertainment industry.

Actress Jane Wyman is enumerated in 1930 as Sara Fulks at 2850 Leeward Avenue in Los Angeles, California. The 18 year old Missouri native is living with her 60 year old widowed mother.
