Jane Powell Jane Powell was born Suzanne Burce in Portland, Oregon on April 1, 1929. She began her singing career on local KOIN radio at the age of seven. The Burce family moved to Los Angeles in the early 1940s and Powell landed a part on the radio show, "Hollywood Showcase." She sang an aria from "Carmen," and impressed the audience. As a result, she was booked on the Charlie McCarthy radio show and offered an MGM contract. Powell shot to fame on the silver screen in leading roles in MGM. Able to act, sing and dance well, she found enormous success in the movies.
Jane Powell Jane Powell (born April 1, 1929) is an American singer, entertainer and actor. She was the petite blonde with an operatic singing voice in many MGM musicals in the 1940s and 1950s. Born Suzanne Lorraine Burce in Portland, Oregon, she sang on the radio as a child, and performed in theater before her film career began in 1944. She appeared in her first film, Song of the Open Road (1944), at age 15. Her first MGM musical was Holiday in Mexico (1946), which brought her to the public's attention, and she was later billed as the co-star in several films including A Date with Judy (1948), and Nancy Goes to Rio (1950).

Although instantly remembered as the star of 20 major MGM musicals, including the classics "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" and "Royal Wedding," she has appeared in every entertainment medium and has ... won acclaim as a dramatic actress and comedienne. She has performed for five U.S. Presidents and the Queen of England. Most recently she starred off-Broadway in "Avow," for which she won unanimous rave reviews for her performance as an enthusiastically religious grandmother-to-be. She received the Drama-Logue Award for "Same Time, Next Year."
powell.jpg Jane Powell joined Southwestern in 1985, serving as an Assistant to the Dean and Student Activities Administrator, and was named Directior of Student Affairs in 1994. She was appointed Assistant Dean/Dean of Students beginning in 2003, and was promoted to Associate Dean/Dean of Students five years later. While working full-time, Dean Powell earned her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in higher education.
