Jane Birkin
built 657 days ago
For 30 years Jane Birkin has been a superstar in France. Her status as popular icon may be partly due to the more than 40 movies she has acted in,but it is due in the biggest part to her relationship with Serge Gainsbourg and the music they made together. Jane has just released her first ever British album '"The Best of Jane Birkin" and on April 15th 1997 played a triumphant concert of Gainsbourg songs in London. It seems Britain, and perhaps the rest of the world, has at last realised what a good thing it has been missing.

The heavy-breathing vocalist on one of the most infamous chart-toppers in British history, Jane Birkin enjoyed a long film and recording career. Born in London in 1946, she followed in her mother's footsteps and began acting at the Kensington Academy in London. While still a teenager, she made her stage debut in Graham Greene's 1964 production Carving a Statue. One year later, she was offered a part in Passion Flower Hotel, a musical produced by James Bond series composer John Barry, and she married him soon after. Birkin's first film, The Knack...And How to Get It, followed in 1965, while a brief nude role in 1966's controversial Blow-Up made her semi-famous. Her marriage with Barry soon broke up... and a trip to France introduced her to Gallic pop star Serge Gainsbourg.

In 1998 Jane Birkin finally turned the page on the Gainsbourg years - her latest album, "A la légère" (released on 14 September), is the first album of her career which does not feature a single track by Gainsbourg. Jane has resolutely turned her face to the future, enlisting the songwriting talent of a host of modern French artists to replace her legendary songwriting partner of old. Jane's new album features eclectic contributions from a diverse range of artists including Alain Chamfort, Miossec, Alain Souchon & Laurent Voulzy, Gérard Manset, Etienne Daho, 60's pop star Françoise Hardy and rising young singer/songwriter Zazie. Appropriately enough, "Love Slow Motion", the first single release from Jane's new album, was written by French rap king MC Solaar - whose sophisticated literary wordplay has often been compared to that of the late great Gainsbourg!

The iconic Jane Birkin will probably always be best known for 'Je t'aime, moi non plus' written by husband Serge Gainsbourg. Offending some and delighting others, her heavy-breathing and sensuous love-making sighs became a hit around the world.
