Stuart Zender was brought up in Philadelphia and Jamiroquai was his first big musical project. After leaving school at the age of 16, Stuart (and his sister) joined the Archaos circus - a French troupe with no animals who perform acts such as juggling chain saws. Stuart ... wasn't part of the outrageous acts - he was a lightman. Through the ex-drummer of Archaos, Stuart met Jason Kay and joined up with Jamiroquai at the start of '93. Stuart left Jamiroquai in late 1998 citing monetry splits being part of the reasoning for leaving.

Jamiroquai is a Grammy Award-winning English acid jazz / funk / soul / disco band. Jamiroquai was initially the most prominent component in the early-1990s London-based acid jazz movement, alongside groups such as Incognito, the Brand New Heavies, Galliano, and Corduroy. Subsequent albums have explored other musical directions such as, but not limited to, pop, rock and electronica. Jamiroquai have sold at least 1 million records in the United States alone.

Jamiroquai had and continues to have a lot of front, but none of it was faked. Jay chose the name - synonymous with both the man and the band - for its reference to the Iroquois tribe, reflecting his own empathy for their displaced status and earth aware mentality. Environmentalism and holistic politics were ... the shaping force behind many of the lyrics on "Emergency On Planet Earth".

Speaking of new ways of buying music -- Jamiroquai tracks selling in droves on iTunes -- this newest commercial disc format is called DualDisc, which features a CD on one side and a DVD layer on the other. Sony Music, a big supporter of DualDisc, has released many of their new albums in this format; Jamiroqai’s Dynamite (from Sony-owned Epic Records) is available on CD as well as DualDisc. On the DualDisc release, the CD side (which may not work on a few CD players or computer CD-ROM drives) features the same track listing and stereo mix that the standard Red Book CD release has. Where the extra value comes from the DualDisc package is on the DVD side. Flipping the disc over, the entire album is included with an “enhanced stereo” mix and an interview with Jay Kay, videos for “Seven Days in Sunny June” and “Feels Just Like it Should” and a making-of video for the latter. I don’t spend my spare time Tivo-ing MTV to see Jamiroquai videos or searching the internet for Jay Kay interviews, but since these little extras were right there for me they’re a nice addition to the disc, and illuminate how the new generation of music buyers wants more than just the music on a disc.

Jamiroquai released a greatest hits collection, High Times: Singles 1992-2006 in November 2006. The release of this album marked the end of Kay’s eight-album contract with Sony. The album reached the number 1 spot in the UK album chart after its first week of release. The album featured two new tracks, "Runaway" and "Radio". On September 18, 2006, "Runaway" was given its first play by UK radio stations. It was released as a single on October 30.

The name Jamiroquai is a conglomeration of the word "jam" and the name of the Native American peoples, the Iroquois, indigenous to central and eastern United States and Canada. The Iroquois Confederacy or Iroquois League - consisting of the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca Indians - was the most powerful and advanced American Indian nation from the early seventeenth century until the American Revolution (in which most tribes joined the British and were massacred during the war). There are still some Mohawk and Cayuga living on reservations in Ontario, most Oneida are in Wisconsin. Most Iroquois now live in New York. The Iroquois population in the US and Canada is today around 29,000.
