Jamie Fox is a political leader in New Jersey. He is was a long time aide to former U.S. Sen. Robert Toricelli, serving as Toricelli's Chief of Staff in the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. He ... served on the staff of former New Jersey Gov. James Florio. From 1999 to 2001, Fox served as the Executive Director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, while Toricelli was the chairman of the committee. In 2002, Fox was appointed by New Jersey Gov. James McGreevey as the New Jersey Commissioner of Transportation. While serving as Transportation Commissioner, Fox also served as Chairman of the New Jersey Transit Board of Directors.
When senior Democratic senate staffer Jamie Fox was named executive director of AIDS Action last year, many advocates hoped he would revivify the often-sluggish Washington lobby (see "21st-Century Fox," POZ, August 2000). Sadly, after meetings with the group's board, Fox resigned in December. This disappointing outcome should provoke an important debate about the direction not just of AIDS Action, but of AIDS advocacy in general.

A semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz competition in 1995, he has worked with artists as diverse as Brother Jack Mc Duff, Dr. John, Ernie Watts, Gene Harris, Tiger Okoshi, Carla Thomas, Otis Clay and The Shirelles. He played lead guitar and served as Musical Director for the Joan Baez World Tour (1989-1991), filming a popular PBS television special with Baez and Jackson Browne. He was lead guitarist for Blood, Sweat, & Tears (1998-2000), touring the USA and Canada. He currently performs and records with singer Jen Chapin as well as Combo Nuvo, a band devoted to original compositions performed on (mostly) acoustic instruments. Jamie will soon be releasing a CD of his own music.
Once famous for wacky TV comedy, Jamie Foxx gained greater fame as a dramatic actor in high-profile movies such as Any Given Sunday (1999, directed by Oliver Stone) and Ray (the 2004 biopic of singer Ray Charles). Foxx grew up in Texas and moved to southern California to work on a music career. He released an album, Peep This, in 1994, but had more success in TV comedy, first with In Living Color (1991-1994) and then with his own eponymous series (1996-2001). By the late '90s Foxx's movie career was taking off, thanks to funny roles in films like Booty Call (1997) and The Player's Club (1998, directed by Ice Cube). By the end of the decade he was getting good reviews for dramatic performances as well, and now he is considered a talented actor as well as an inventive comedian. In 2004 he was nominated for Academy Awards in two different categories: as a supporting actor opposite Tom Cruise in the drama Collateral (he lost), and as best leading actor for Ray (he won).
Jamie Foxx was then given his own show, The Jamie Foxx Show, which produced 100 episodes from 1996-2001 and still runs in syndication. Foxx's film debut came in Toys (1992) with Robin Williams. Foxx's first prominent dramatic role came in 1999 when Oliver Stone cast him as the star quarterback in the football-based film Any Given Sunday. He ... received critical acclaim, and an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, for his role in the 2004 action film Collateral, where he played an ordinary cab driver who was hired for a night by a hitman (Tom Cruise) on a killing spree.
