James Watt (January 19, 1736 - August 19, 1819) was a Scottish mathematician and engineer. He did not invent the first steam engine. There were other patented steam engines (such as the Savery and Newcomen steam engines) in use by the time Watt started his work on them. His major contribution is in developing the modern form of the steam engine. The Watt steam engine is credited for driving the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries.

James Watt was of humble lineage, born in Greenock, Scotland on January 19, 1736. Greenock was then a little Scotch fishing village that became a busy town with a fleet of steamships during Watt's lifetime. His grandfather, Thomas Watt, was a well known mathematician and local schoolmaster. His father was a prominent citizen of Greenock, and was at various times chief magistrate and treasurer of the town.

James Watt was never the inventor of the steam engine. However, his important contribution to the steam age and the significant improvements he made were revolutionary.

James Watt was born in the village of Greenock in Renfrewshire, Scotland, on January 19, 1736. He received his earliest education at home from his mother and in his father’s workshop, where his father oversaw a prosperous house- and ship-building business. At the workshop, Watt developed a keen interest in tools, instruments and model-making. He later attended grammar school, where he studied Greek, Latin, mathematics and other subjects. Watt’s penchant for building shaped his choice of a career, as the young man decided to apprentice himself to an instrument maker in London. Of a sickly nature, Watt soon found himself ill-suited for the bustling and noisy atmosphere of London.
