James Spader photo An actor with a taste for extremes, James Spader has forged a career built upon exploring the darker side of human nature. After starting out in such films as ENDLESS LOVE opposite Brooke Shields, and John Hughes' PRETTY IN PINK, Spader hit his stride in 1989 when he won the award for Best Actor at that year's Cannes Film Festival for his role in Steven Soderburgh's SEX, LIES, AND VIEDOTAPE. His reputation cemented, the 1990's saw him taking lead roles in such fare as Luis Mandoki's WHITE PALACE opposite Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins' BOB ROBERTS, Nicholas Kazan's DREAM LOVER, the box-office hit STARGATE with Kurt Russell, Sidney Lumet's CRITICAL CARE and David Cronenberg's CRASH, which caused a sensation for its portrayal of the raw sexuality of car-crash victims.

James Spader An actor with a taste for extremes, James Spader has forged a career built upon exploring the darker side of human nature. Most recently Spader attracted the attention of television critics and audiences alike with his portrayal of the ethically-challenged attorney, Alan Shore, on ABC’s “The Practice,” a role that won him an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He returns this year to headline David E. Kelley’s new drama, “Boston Legal".
Big screen star James Spader's turn as Alan Shore on television's The Practice and Boston Legal earned him consecutive Emmys in 2004 and 2005. Spader has been in the movies since the 1980s, a decade in which he became known for playing wicked preppies and yuppies in movies such as Pretty in Pink (1986), Less Than Zero (1987) and Wall Street (1987, with Michael Douglas). He won a Best Actor award at Cannes for his performance as a voyeur in Steven Soderbergh's sex, lies and videotape (1989), laying the foundation for a career as a sexy oddball. Never quite the leading man the critics expected, Spader has nonetheless had a successful career as a character actor and quirky protagonist. His movies include Bad Influence (1990, with Rob Lowe), Stargate (1994, with Kurt Russell), the film version of J.G. Ballard's Crash (1997, with Holly Hunter) and Secretary (2002, with Maggie Gyllenhaal).

James Spader was born on February 7, 1960 in Boston, Massachusettes. While both of his parents had careers in the teaching profession, James was more interested in pursuing a career in acting. When he was 17 or 18 he moved to New York and enrolled in the Michael Chekhov Studio to study drama. Around that same time he got a tiny part in a little known film entitled, "Team Mates," in 1978. Although his role was miniscule, this lead to his second film, "Endless Love," in which he had a much more substantial part. During the early 1980s James Spader appeared in a few TV-movies, and in 1985 he had the starring role in the film, "Tuff Turf," where he plays a young rebellious high school student.
