James Monroe: Westmoreland County
built 266 days ago
In February 1786 James Monroe married Elizabeth Kortright of New York City. The Monroes had three children-Eliza (born December 1786), James Spence Monroe (born May 1799, died September 1800), and Maria Hester (born early 1803). For twenty-four years the Monroe family's home was HIGHLAND, Monroe's Albemarle County plantation adjacent to Jefferson's Monticello.
James Monroe's branch of the family immigrated to America from Scotland in the mid-17th century. In 1650, Major Andrew Monroe, son of David Munro of Katewell, patented a large tract of land in Washington Parish, Westmoreland County, Virginia. He later built Monrovia... known as Monroe Hall, on Monroe Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River near present day Colonial Beach, Virginia. This estate became the plantation that generations of Monroes would cultivate.
JAMES MONROE was born on April 28, 1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was one of five children of Spence Monroe and Elizabeth Jones who were both natives of Virginia. The Monroe’s lived on a small farm and young James walked several miles each day to attend the school of Parson Campbell, who taught him the stern moral code that he followed throughout his life.
