James Mason (November 19, 1849 – January 18, 1905) was a famous chess player and writer. He was born in Kilkenny in Ireland. His original name is unknown: he was adopted as a child and only took the name James Mason when he and his family moved to the United States of America in 1861. There he learnt chess and eventually secured a job at the New York Herald.

James Monroe Mason at sixteen In the photo above, James Mason and Captain Frank Gurley are the second pair of riders partially concealed by the Confederate flag in the foreground. Gurley's horse is behind the flag and Mason stands out on the right of Gurley. Eleven of the thirteen riders in this group were identified by name written on the photo border and it is believed all were from Company C of the Fourth Alabama Cavalry. The group riding behind the second flag is probably from a different unit. The second photo shown below was another photo taken further up the street and converted into a postcard depicting General Evans and his staff.
James Mason broke into British films in 1935 after working several years on the stage. For the rest of the decade, he alternated unsuccessful theatre ventures with increasingly important movies. Though he was a conscientious objector, he became one of England's biggest stars during the World War II era. When he moved to Hollywood after the war, success initially eluded him. But he eventually won an Academy Award nomination for A Star is Born (1954) and had steady work as an actor in nearly 50 films between 1963 and his death in 1984. During that time, he earned two additional Oscar nominations and was voted Cinema Actor of the Century by a panel of international critics in 1967.
James Mason received a BMus degree from the Shenandoah Conservatory and a MMus degree from Catholic University, Washington, DC, in oboe performance. Mason studied with Gene Montooth, John de Lancie, and Richard Woodhams. Prof. Mason has appeared as soloist, chamber musician, and clinician with orchestras across Canada, Europe, North and South America and Japan. He has been principal oboist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony and Boston Symphony Orchestras. He participates in summer music festivals, including the Elora Festival, Festival of the Sound in Parry Sound, and the Cambridge Arts & Music Festival in Cambridge, Ontario. Mason is principal oboist with the Canadian Chamber Ensemble and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. He was appointed Artist-In-Residence in 2005.
