James Mason: Gate Company

James Mason received several post war metals that he wore at all the Confederate Veterans events. As pictured below, one was the Gen. Nathan B. Forrest Commemorative Medal and the other was a Unit Citation Medal for Company C, Fourth Alabama Volunteer Cavalry.

The son of a wealthy merchant, Mason decided he could make more money on the stage than designing buildings, and played with the Old Vic and the Gate Company in Dublin. He first appeared onscreen in British "quota quickies" and caused a sensation as a handsome, sadistic aristocrat in the 1943 costume drama, "The Man in Grey".

Unfortunately this glowing praise was the best review Mason ever received for his stage work. The richness of his voice, used to such memorable effect in his film work, somehow did not seem to have quite the same depth and power on stage. However he enjoyed moderate success as a stage actor, doing a season at the Old Vic with Charles Laughton, followed by a season at The Gate in Dublin, most notable for his appearance as Brutus in Julius Caesar, which later became one of his most celebrated film roles.
