James Marsters was born James Wesley Marsters on August 20, 1962 in Greenville, California. He graduated from Davis High School and went on to study at Juilliard, the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts and the American Conservatory Theatre. After ten years of stage work, Marsters relocated to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film and television. He landed his big break when he was cast as the vampire Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Although his character was originally written to be killed after a few episodes, Spike got so popular with series fans that they made him a regular on the show. Marsters even went on to reprise his character on the Buffy spin-off, Angel.

According to Zap2it.com, James Marsters is set to reprise his role as Dr. Milton Fine, the alter ego of supervillain Brainiac, on "Smallville" later this season. He heads a lineup of guest stars on The WB that ... includes "Desperate Housewives" star James Denton, Nick Lachey and Kelly Carlson of "Nip/Tuck."

James Marsters portrays Spike, a cocky vampire from 19th century England. Spike, responsible for the death of two previous slayers, struggled this past season with a chip imbedded in his brain that prevents him from harming humans. And, in one of the most dramatic plot twists in the series' history, he consummated his love for Buffy. When later rebuffed by her, he began a cataclysmic self-transformation.
