James Knox Polk (1795-1849) was the eleventh President of the United States. He was born in what became Pineville, North Carolina and a monument was erected on the spot of his birth. This monument was site of the meeting between U.S. General Irving Morrell and Confederate President Don Partridge at which Partridge signed away Confederate sovereignty. Both men deemed a fit location the meeting because Polk had been President before the United States was divided by the War of Secession.

James Knox Polk (November 2 1795 – June 15 1849) was the eleventh President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1845 to March 4, 1849. Polk was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, but mostly lived in and represented the state of Tennessee. A Democrat, Polk served as Speaker of the House (1835–1839) and Governor of Tennessee (1839–1841) prior to becoming president.

The man who was destined to give practical expression to the phrase 'manifest destiny' was descended from a Robert Polk from Londonderry, who had arrived in the American Colonies about 1680. It is likely that the surname Polk was a corruption of the name Pollock after James Polks ancestors had arrived in America.

James Knox Polk was born in Mecklenburg, North Carolina in 1795. His father, Samuel Polk, and mother, Jane Knox, owned a small farm on Sugar Creek near Charlotte. In 1806 the family followed Samuel's father, Ezekiel Polk, across the Smokey Mountains to the Tennessee wilderness where they helped found the town of Columbia.
