James Garner James Garner was the first man drafted from Oklahoma for service in the Korean War. He was wounded in action, and won a Purple Heart. Garner's first major role was on the TV western, Maverick. The show was a huge hit and Garner was its breakout star, but during a writers' strike in 1960, the studio suspended production of the show, and stopped paying the actors. Garner considered this a breach of his contract, and refused to return when the strike was settled. He was sued by the studio, and won, and stayed away from television work for the next decade.

James Garner From All Movie Guide: The son of an Oklahoma carpet layer, James Garner did stints in the Army and merchant marines before working as a model. His professional acting career began with a non-speaking part in the Broadway play The Caine Mutiny Court Martial (1954), in which he was ... assigned to run lines with stars Lloyd Nolan, Henry Fonda, and John Hodiak. Given that talent roster, and the fact that the director was Charles Laughton, Garner managed to earn his salary and receive a crash course in acting at the same time. After a few television commercials, he was signed as a contract player by Warner Bros. in 1956. He barely had a part in his first film, The Girl He Left Behind (1956), though he was given special attention by director David Butler, who felt Garner had far more potential than the film's nominal star, Tab Hunter.
When James Garner entered the world, these stories made the front page of the nation's newspapers: In the United States, a global anti-war treaty proposed by Secretary of State Frank Kellogg is discussed by several world powers. The Socialist Party nominates Norman Thomas for president of the United States in New York City. The Turkish National Assembly rejects the proposal to recognize Islam as the state religion. In other news, Hungarian communist leader Bela Kun is taken into custody by Vienna police. The original manuscript of "Alice In Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll is purchased in the United States for $75,260.
James Garner is speaking out about the import role farmers are playing in providing a secure food and energy future. While news reports abound about increasing food prices, many do not realize that Americans still enjoy the cheapest food supply in the world. While the average price of a Thanksgiving dinner for 10 has increased about $4 this year, the price adjusted for inflation has declined about 9 percent in the past 20 years. According to the United States' Department of Agriculture (USDA), Americans spend just 10 percent of their disposable income on food expenses, while households in countries like India often spend 50 percent of their budget on food.
