James Coburn James Coburn (August 31, 1928, Laurel, Nebraska – November 18, 2002) was an Oscar-winning American movie actor. Coburn became famous as the "tough guy" in a variety of films, first mostly with his friends Robert Vaughn and Charles Bronson (whom he co-starred with in The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape). In 1966, Coburn finally became a bona-fide star
James Coburn was at home when the heart attack happened on Nov. 18. He was listening to Billie Holiday with his wife, Paula. According to his manager, he died in her arms. He was 74 and damn near the last of a breed.
James Coburn took 200 micrograms ofLSD on December 10,1959 - his first trip. In his paperwork, he gave his reason for volunteering: "to gauge present consciousness (where I am to where I can possibly go)." Now 69 and still acting, Coburn looks back fondly on his session withOscar Janiger. "It was phenomenal," he says. "I loved it. LSD really woke me up to seeing the world with a depth of objectivity. Even though it was asubjective experience, it opened your mind to seeing things in new ways, in a new depth."
In February 1993, James Coburn appeared with several other health-conscious celebrities and Rep. Bill Richardson (D-NM) at a benefit for the Nutritional Health Alliance at Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, California. The event was a pep rally to help mobilize the troops to oppose proposed new FDA regulations on the supplement industry and Coburn was a very effective speaker. He discussed how his arthritis was helped (he used the word "cured") by nutritional supplements. For a man who was 64 at the time, and who had been disabled by illness a few years before, he appeared unusually strong, vigorous, and dynamic as photographs taken that day attest.
