James Coburn was an actor whose versatility allowed him to shift gears from drama to action to comedy with ease. Whether he was fighting evil geniuses, kissing beautiful women, or psychoanalysing the President of the United States, audiences could always depend on his considerable skills.

He came of age in an era of pretty-boy movie stars, matinee idols with the glossy perfection of Robert Redford or Warren Beatty, but James Coburn was no pretty boy. He could be strong, funny, smooth or sexy as the situation called for it, but Coburn was always tough.

Oscar winner James Coburn and his wife, Paula, have put their home of seven years on the market. The five-story custom-built estate sits behind gates in the same tony neighborhood as the homes of Carrie Fisher and James Woods. The more than 10,000-square-foot spread, which is nestled into a hillside, includes a foyer, a library, a media room, a stone fireplace, a piano salon, a ballroom, a Pilates room, an elevator, and his-and-hers marble baths with spacious wardrobes. Outside, there are terraced gardens, and a pool and patio with views of the city and ocean. The couple reportedly bought the place after a 1994 earthquake destroyed their previous home. Reps for Coburn are mum on where the couple plans to settle next.

He was born in Laurel, Nebraska on the same day in 1928 as his twin brother Robert, who much later taught philosophy at Ohio State. James was the son of an auto mechanic and a schoolteacher and the grandson of cigar-chomping, Oscar-winning character actor Charles Coburn.

Bruce Lee works with actor James Coburn and screenwriter Stirling Silliphant on a screenplay about the philosophy of the martial arts entitled The Silent Flute. Coburn, Silliphant, and Lee go to India intent on filming, but the trip ends in disaster when Coburn screams at Lee for constantly humming pop songs. Crushed, Lee again shakes his fist and vows revenge, but The Silent Flute is abandoned. In 1987 The Silent Flute is re-titled Circle of Iron and released starring David Carradine.
James Coburn Coburn married Beverly Kelly in 1959; the couple had two children, Lisa and James Jr., before divorcing in 1979. Coburn had been married to Paula Murad since 1993. He died of a sudden heart attack in November 2002, at the age of 74.
