Born September 26, 1968, James Caviezel grew up in Mt. Vernon, Washington. The Caviezels were a rather large family, with Jim Caviezel having one brother and three sisters. They are of mainly Irish ancestry, but the family name is actually Romansch, a language spoken primarily in southeastern Switzerland. Growing up, Jim Caviezel dreamed of being a sports star - a star player for a major league basketball team. However as things turned out, the acting bug got hold of Jim, and there was no turning back.

* In an interview with Newsweek magazine, James Caviezel spoke about a few of the difficulties he experienced while filming. This included being accidentally whipped twice, which has left a 14 inch scar on his back. Caviezel ... admitted he was struck by lightning while filming the Sermon on the Mount and during the crucifixion, experienced hypothermia during the dead of winter in Italy.

James Caviezel was born and raised in Skagitt County, Washington. The Caviezels were a family of athletes, and James steered initially towards athletics, especially basketball. It wasn't until an injured foot sidelined him that James began to develop other interests. His first acting gig was an undergraduate stage adaptation of the Frank Sinatra musical Come Blow Your Horn. In the early 1980s he re-located to Los Angeles, working as a waiter and making the rounds of auditions.
