Whether or not you liked Titanic, James Cameron is a tremendously profitable filmmaker that has beaten the odds before. Titanic was an insanely expensive film that was expected to be one of the greatest celluloid debacles of all time. Instead it went on to be one of the most profitable movies ever made, in defiance of everyone's expectations. Cameron gets the credit for it - you could argue that he saved the studio from ruin.
