His mother, father and sister are all in the movie industry so it was no surprise Jake followed their footsteps. His first starring role was in City Slickers as Billy Chrystal's son when he was only 10. His first big movie was October Sky in 1999. After this movie Jake went to college for 2 years then dropped out to persue his acting career. In 2001 Jake starred in 2 movies.

Jake Gyllenhaal's conspicuous absence from the news following Heath Ledger's death has left many speculating about his response to the tragedy. As Ledger's Brokeback Mountain costar and the godfather to the late actor's daughter, Gyllenhaal is considered to have been one of his closest friends.TMZ reports... that Jake is on location in New Mexico for a film shoot, but is deeply saddened and will not speak to the press.
