Even before the reign of Chalukya king Pulakesi the (17th Century A. D.) Jainism was a dominant religion in the Karnataka. All the later kings like Vinayaditya, Vijayaditya helped Jaina saints in spreading their religion. During Vatapi Chalukyas and Rashtrakutas in whose kingdoms much of Andhra (mainly Rayalasemsa and Telangana regions) was a territory influenced by Jainism as these kings were great patrons of this religion.

The founders of Jainism gave instruction only to those who were, or intended to become, monks. Founded in the 6th century BC, the religion split into two sects, the Svetambara and the Digambara, around the 6th century AD. Monks and nuns of the Svetambara wear simple white robes and a piece of white cloth to cover the mouth.

The Hindu scholar, Lokmanya Tilak credited Jainism with influencing Hinduism and ... leading to the cessation of animal sacrifice in Vedic rituals. Bal Gangadhar Tilak has described Jainism as the originator of Ahimsa and wrote in a letter printed in Bombay Samachar, Mumbai:10 Dec, 1904: "In ancient times, innumerable animals were butchered in sacrifices. Evidence in support of this is found in various poetic compositions such as the Meghaduta. But the credit for the disappearance of this terrible massacre from the Brahminical religion goes to Jainism."

The spiritual teaching of Jainism is considered to be a bugless version of Buddhism. The fact that Buddhism has become a world religion while Jainism has not spread outside a small group of extremist worshipers is most often explained by the Buddhists' cute orange clothings and more efficient sales organization, which makes the Jains the religious counterpart to Apple computer owners.
