Jainism: Life
built 658 days ago
Jainism is an ancient faith rooted in the pre-Aryan Indus Civilization, concerned primarily with teaching ways and means of escaping the entanglements of the world. Jainism is a life-negating, somber, pessimistic faith.

The founder of Jainism was Rishabha. It is believed that Rishabha invented pottery, painting, sculpture… The twenty-second Tirthankara, Arishtanemi, is believed to have been a cousin of Krishna. Parshva was the 23rd Tirthankara. He married a princess and lived an affluent life until he was 30 years of age. He then, renounced his life as a householder. He underwent 84 days of intense meditation.

Jainism's stance on nonviolence goes far beyond vegetarianism. Jains refuse food obtained with unnecessary cruelty. Many practice a lifestyle similar to Veganism due to the violence of modern dairy farms, and others exclude root vegetables from their diets in order to preserve the lives of the plants from which they eat.[10] Potatoes, garlic and onions in particular are avoided by Jains.[11] Devout Jains do not eat, drink, or travel after sunset and prefer to drink water that is first boiled and then cooled to room temperature. Many Jains abstain from eating green vegetables and root vegetables one day each week. The particular day is determined by the lunar calendar and is Ashtami (eighth day of the lunar month) and New Moon and followed by the second Ashtami and Full Moon night.
There are two sects in Jainism -- the Svetambaras and the Digambaras. Both believe in the same basic tenets and worship images of the tirthankaras. The Digambaras are the older and more conservative of the two sects. A Digambara saint does not wear any clothes and leads an extremely austere life. The Svetambaras represent the newer school of Jainism. They believe in the same goal of moksha but their way of attaining that goal is not as rigid as that of the Digambaras.
