Jainism is an offshoot of the collection of modes of worship (and thinking) termed Hinduism. Jainism articulates Hindu Principles (Hindu Tattvas) in respects of non-violence and respect for all living beings.

Numbers: One of the oldest religious traditions of India, Jainism has existed side by side with Hinduism throughout its long history. With fewer than 5 million adherents and comprising less than 1% the Indian population, Jainism has demonstrated a remarkable tenacity and endurance and continues to exert an influence far beyond its small numbers.

Jainism lays heavy emphasis on non-violence (ahimsa) and the believers of this religion, whether a monk or a householder, follow a very strict, well disciplined life. In fact, the householders are supposed to evolve to the monkhood in the later stages of life as was the case with the Hinduism in the Vedic era.

Hinduism and Jainism comprise the oldest continually observed religious traditions of the Indian subcontinent. Both have spread beyond the subcontinent to virtually all parts of the globe, though most adherents to these faiths claim Indian ancestry. In the two conferences devoted to these traditions, scholars and religious leaders explored Hindu and Jaina literature, history, sociology, ritual, and asceticism in light of the current ecological crisis.
