Jacques Villeneuve: Gilles Villeneuve
built 117 days ago
Jacques Villeneuve attempted for the second and last time to qualify for the Canadian GP on the track now named after Gilles. Gilles had been the first Canadian to win a F1 race at this same track in 1978. The car is a March design built by the RAM team during one of the lowest points in March's F1 history. After having missed the Detroit GP a week earlier because of sponsorship troubles, the car was flown to the Mosport race track near Toronto so that JV could test it. He had won the Can-Am sports car race at this track the previous week. However when he tried to qualify for the GP in Montreal he could not get enough heat into the tires during the official qualifying session and failed to make the grid. Unfortunately his times during the free practice would have been good enough for a position on the grid.

Jacques Villeneuve was probably never in contention for a full-time F1 ride, and his two entries for Arrows at the end of 1981 were probably no more than a time-filling exercise as the team regrouped for 1982. Jacques may well have been turned off F1 even more in 1982 when Gilles' Ferrari vaulted over the back of the number 17 March driven by Jochen Mass in qualifying at Zolder, and the French-Canadian legend crashed to his death.

Jacques's father Gilles was a great Formula 1 driver for Ferrari. In 1976, Gilles moved the family to Monaco, but in 1982, the senior Villeneuve died in a qualifying accident for a race in Belgium. Jacques was only 11 at the time of his father's death.

This painting depicts Jacques Villeneuve winning his first Indy Car Race in 1994, at Road America, Elkhart Lake Wisconsin. The painting ... depicts the winning tradition established by Gilles Villeneuve which is now carried on by his son, Jacques. The image of Jacques’ car appears to be morphing out from the image of Gilles’ car in the background. Original acrylic on board painting. Signed by the artist.

Jacques Villeneuve, one of the most colorful Formula 1 drivers of the last decade has finally found a new job for 2007 after he ended his F1 career abruptly in the middle of last season. No, it's not back in Formula 1, and it's not that Nascar seat he has been looking for.
