LYCOS RETRIEVER
Jackie Stewart: Team
built 673 days ago
Complicated history: Sound sorceress Jackie Stewart, known as Oblivia in the Portland noise improv group Smegma, invadeth the region where Smegma was formed back in the ‘70s, when the microscopic yet now world-renowned Los Angeles Free Music Society was nascent. Oblivia didn’t join Smegma till ’83; still, it was natural that while here she would team with LAFMS eminence Tom Recchion and Smegman/husband Ju Suk Reet Meate. So she did.

Several other early influences ... impacted on Stewart's later life. His brother Jimmy, eight years his senior, raced for the Ecurie Ecosse team in the 1950s. The young Jackie followed him to races and his brother's 'exotic' lifestyle appealed. Jimmy Stewart was also accident-prone and after one crash too many, he gave up the sport under pressure from his mother. The two brothers have remained close and when Jimmy became an alcoholic after the failure of his second marriage, it was Jackie who provided him with the financial and psychological support needed to make a full recovery.

Never a promising student, Stewart, who was dyslexic, left school prior to graduation. He soon took up clay target shooting. Competing in shooting tournaments in Scotland, he hoped to qualify to join Great Britain's 1960 Olympic team. His poor performance during the final round of the Olympic trials on his 21st birthday ended that plan... and Stewart returned home, believing he was destined to work at his father's garage.
