Jackie Stewart: Grand Prix
built 673 days ago
Jackie Stewart is one of Britain 's all time great sporting personalities. Winner of three motor racing F1 World Championships and twenty-seven Grand Prix, Jackie's black cap and sideburns remain an unmistakable image of awesome speed, 70s glamour and charisma.
Jackie Stewart competed against some of the great names of Grand Prix legend: fellow-Scot Jim Clark, to whom he was so close, Gurney, Surtees, Hill, Rindt, Fittipaldi and their peers. In doing so, he crafted a reputation and a racing record that would stand for 14 years, an eternity in Formula 1 terms, until broken by another great driver he much admired, France's Alain Prost. Jackie's Formula 1 achievements still place him among the top five drivers of all time.

In 1964 Jackie Stewart took part in Formula Three and had his first win at Snetterton Motor Racing Circuit. In 1965 he joined BRM so as to compete in Formula One. He debuted in South Africa and later gained a victory at the BRDC International Trophy. Unfortunately in 1966 he would have won the Indianapolis 500 had it not been for a mechanical problem and ... he was given the honor of Rookie of the Year. During the Belgian Grand Prix of 1966 Stewart was involved in a terrible crash due to rainy weather. The marshals were unable to help him, so his teammate Hill rescued him.

In 1997, Stewart became chairman of Paul Stewart Grand Prix Racing, a team he founded in partnership with his son Paul and Ford Motor Company. Signing drivers Rubens Barrichello and Jan Magnussen, Stewart managed his team from their first appearance at the 1997 Australian Grand Prix with the same intensity he once showed behind the wheel. Selling Paul Stewart Racing team to Ford in 1999 for 60 million pounds, a year later Stewart retired from active involvement in what was renamed Jaguar Racing, citing the desire to spend time with his family. As of 2003 he retained his role as president of the British Racing Drivers' Club as well as president of the Scottish Dyslexia Trust. He ... remained an active role as a Ford Motor Company consultant, acted as trustee for the Scottish International Education Trust, was the Springfield Club's president, and acted as chairman for the Grand Prix Mechanics Charitable Trust. Stewart also was on the board of Moet & Chandon and was a patron of the British Dyslexia Association.

Jackie had decided to retire after the US GP at Watkins Glen and what would have been his 100th Grand Prix start, but the weekend was to be clouded by tragedy as his team-mate François Cevert was killed in practice. The Tyrrell team withdrew their cars, and the wonderful career of John Young Stewart was over. Since then, of course, Jackie has worked harder than ever. He was seen regularly at the circuits, imparting his wisdom to a new generation of racers, and his son Paul, much against his parents' wishes, raced with some success, before setting up his own team, Paul Stewart Racing. The near-dominance of the operation in the junior formulae during the early nineties led to an ambitious move into Formula 1 in 1997. With a five-year engine deal from Ford, and Jackie's business acumen and vast experience, Stewart Grand Prix was clearly going to be a force to be reckoned with.
