Jack Roosevelt Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia, to a family of sharecroppers. After his father left the family, Robinson’s mother moved with her five children to Pasadena, California. Robinson, a high school sports star, attended Pasadena Junior College (now Pasadena City College) and then won a scholarship to the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). There he demonstrated exceptional athletic ability, becoming the first UCLA student athlete to win varsity letters in four sports—football, basketball, baseball, and track.

Jackie did excel in many sports. He went to Pasadena Junior College where he played on the football, basketball, baseball, and track teams. After graduating from there, he received a scholarship to go to UC LA. Jackie enjoyed great success at UCLA, in fact he was at least one of the best players on each team. He was the first person ever to letter in four sports at UCLA.
In 1939 Robinson entered the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), where he became the first student ever to earn letters in four different sports. He was a star running back on the football team, dubbed the "greatest ball carrier" in the game by Sporting News. As a
Seventeen-year-old Jackie attends George Washington High School in Pasadena, California. He excels in sports — even winning the city's Ping-Pong championship. Jackie's brother Mack competes in the Summer Olympics held in Berlin, Germany. He wins the silver medal in the 200-meter dash, finishing second behind Jesse Owens.
New York Yankees v Oakland Athletics This year’s national celebration was centered at Dodger Stadium, not far from where Robinson grew up in Pasadena. He would become the first athlete to earn letters in four sports at UCLA, and he served in the U.S. Army during World War II before making his debut with the Dodgers at age 27.

In 1935, Robinson graduated from Dakota Junior High School and enrolled in John Muir High School ("Muir Tech").[11] There he played on various Muir Tech sport teams, and lettered in four of them. He was a shortstop and catcher on the baseball team, a quarterback on the football team, a guard on the basketball team, and a member of the tennis team and the track and field squad. He won awards in the broad jump.[12]
