Jackie Robinson: Playing
built 628 days ago
Try to imagine what Jackie Robinson endured in the land of the free. Just for a moment, put yourself in his cleats. Hatred is a brutal thing; personal attacks can cut right to the heart of a human being. For Robinson, they were non-stop.

Jerry Robinson, Jackie's father, left the family in 1919. Later the Robinson family moved to California where Jackie's uncle lived. Life was better there, but the family was still very poor. Jackie's mother worked long hours as a domestic, leaving the children home on their own. Gaining an education was very important to Jackie's mother.
Since Jackie had a lot of free time, he had some jobs. He had a paper route, he cut lawns, and he ran errands for people. The rest of the time that he had free, he stole things from stores. He mostly stole food. He was ... a member of the Pepper Street gang. The gang did not contain any white members, it only had Japanese, Mexicans, and blacks. All the kids in the gang came from poor families and had a lot of free time.

As an adolescent, Jackie soon found friends, and became a member of the "Pepper Street Gang" — a group of mischievous blacks, Hispanics and Asians. The Reverend Karl Downs, the pastor at Pasadena's Scotts Methodist Church, saw that Jackie was headed for trouble. The Reverend Downs filled the empty, fatherless void in Jackie's life by influencing him ethically and religiously. As a friend and mentor, the minister formed a structure in Jackie, which would eventually see him through high school and into college.

Visiting scholars will attend an awards ceremony at which Mrs. Robinson will be recognized for her outstanding work in education. They ... will spend time with CEOs of St. Louis-based companies at a luncheon on September 23, co-sponsored by Brown Shoe and the St. Louis Business Diversity Initiative.
When Jackie started school the teachers saw how worn out his clothes were so they all brought in clothes for him. Jackie started working at the age 9. He had 4 jobs. His jobs were collecting newspapers and selling them to the junkman. When he 10, he sold hot dogs at the nearby Rose Bowl Stadium. He caddied at one of the private golf courses and then in his last job he would wake up at 4am on Sunday mornings and deliver newspapers.
