Jackie Robinson: Army

Jackie enlisted in the Army during World War II and served as a moral officer. He was discharged in 1945, having achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. During his Army enlistment there was an incident in which a camp bus driver told Jackie to move to the rear of the bus. Jackie refused and the driver complained to the authorities. Jackie received a court-martial but was acquitted.

In 1941... Jackie left college because of financial difficulties and joined the U.S. Army. Robinson became first lieutenent of the 761st Tank Battalion, a group of Black soldiers. By federal law, Black soldiers were not allowed to fight alongside White soldiers. Robinson, however, never accompanied the battalion in combat. He was court-martialed for refusing an order from a bus driver to move to the back of the bus. He was eventually acquitted from the charges.

In 1942, Robinson was drafted into the Army. He served in Kansas and Texas, and eventually became a second lieutenant. While serving in Fort Hood, Texas, Robinson refused to obey an order to move to the back of an army bus. Because this was a violation of Army regulations, a court martial heard the matter; Robinson was acquitted.
