Jackie Cochran: Records
built 185 days ago
Although not as instantly recognizable as certain other rockabilly artists, vocalist Jackie Lee Cochran was one of the genre's earliest supporters, issuing several overlooked singles in the late '50s. Born in Dalton, GA, in the early '30s, Cochran was raised in both Louisiana and Texas. He was attracted to music and singing via country artists he heard on local radio, and decided to relocate to Los Angeles in the mid-'50s, where he soon became a featured artist on Cliffie Stone's Hometown Jamboree. This eventually led to a contract with Decca Records, for whom Cochran cut several singles for. When rockabilly's popularity began to dwindle in the early '60s, Cochran continued to perform, as his live shows showcased a wide variety of musical styles: country, pop, blues, rockabilly, and rock & roll. During the '70s, Cochran adopted the nickname "Waukeen" (as a tribute to his American-Indian heritage), and continued to tour.

Cochran's early childhood is a bit of a mystery. She claimed to have been an orphan with no exact record of her birth (although some debate the issue) Historians consequently disagree about when she was born, with dates ranging from 1905 all the way to 1913. Although her birth date is uncertain, it is clear that Cochran grew up in poverty in the rural panhandle of Florida.
With the excellent record of achievement Jackie expected the best for her group. The worst happened! Congress voted against allowing the WASP to officially join the Army Air Corp and to further insult Jackie and her girls the program was deactivated. The war at this time was coming to a close and the need for women was not as necessary as it was at its conception. But the WASP were treated vulgarly. They were used until they were not needed anymore.
[I]n 1933 Jackie was not yet in the hunt for world records, or even personal hair dressers. She was... winning her battle with flight studies, as well as the heart of millionaire Floyd Odlum, who she had met the previous year in Miami. By the autumn of 1933 Jackie and Floyd were openly discussing the deepening of their friendship. It would be another three years before the couple decided to marry. Even then their relationship would be non-traditional by mid-20th Century standards, with both parties pursuing their own individual projects at break-neck speed.
During her flying years, Jackie broke every speed, altitude and distance record for women. In 1962 alone, she established over 30 speed records in her Lockheed Jetstar. She later flew 1,429 miles per hour in a Lockheed F-104G Starfighter.
In Doris Rich's latest aviation biography, barefoot, illiterate Bessie Pittman reinvents herself as Jacqueline Cochran, the brash beautician who set more speed and altitude records than any pilot in history. …Rich illuminates herself the lesser-known facts of this under-appreciated pioneer and lights a belated candle for her too.
