Jackie Cochran: Person
built 186 days ago
Born in May 1910, Jackie was raised by a foster family in extreme poverty. As a child, she toiled twelve hours a day, six days a week in a Georgia cotton mill where she earned 6 cents an hour. With her first paycheck, eight-year-old Jackie bought the first pair of shoes she ever owned – a pair of high heels. The harsh environment that consumed her early years forged in Jackie an iron-clad resolve that would become the essence of her personality.

Many of Cochran's achievements were linked to military people and planes and places at Edwards. After making her groundbreaking Mach 1 flight over California skies, it was to the Edward's Officer's Club where Cochran and Yeager and their compatriots retired to celebrate - though at least one invited guest, another female aviator legendary in Edwards history, was less than thrilled to be on the guest list. Florence "Pancho" Barnes and Cochran, it is said, reportedly were bitter adversaries both personally and professionally, possibly in part because of rivaling friendships with Yeager.

At the age of ten Jackie was promoted to inspection room supervisor. She enjoyed the responsibility and was a natural leader. Jackie was in charge of a crew of other children with some being older than her. The experience of personal responsibility as a child would help Jackie for the rest of her life. She was a leader of others and after seeing so many people including herself being abused by their bosses was a great lesson. Jackie would be a leader the rest of her life.
