Jackie Cochran: Life
built 186 days ago
Earhart's friend Jackie Cochran, less well known than her ill-fated contemporary, made her name in the annals of aviation after fortune granted her the longevity Earhart was denied. Cochran survived years of adventure in high-speed flight test and marked many aviation milestones before her death in 1980 - at an age nobody can really be sure of, owing to the murkiness of details known about her early life.

Jackie was well learned in navigational skills. She was level headed in her commercial application to her businesses and had a great sense of practical imagination. Once during an air race in 1949 Jackie demonstrated her flying skills in awing the spectators with aerial spraying techniques. Everyone knew that crop dusters were used in agriculture applications ... this time Jackie flew over and sprayed the audience of approximately 75,000 people with one of the perfumes that her cosmetic company produced and sold. The spectators were lightly sprayed with Shinning Hour perfume. She loved to combine her two businesses and loves in life.

Throughout 1933 Jackie practiced every flight maneuver known to man, mastering spot landings, figure 8s, turns, spins and emergencies. Frustration and embarrassment were constant companions, but Jackie was determined to conquer and control the demons that drove her skyward. Despite the emotional drain of studying, Jackie learned that the intensity of flight served to calm the "can't sit still buzz" that dogged her throughout her life. She ... discovered that she had fallen in love with the California desert.
Although Jackie denied her family and her past, she remained in touch with her family and provided for them over the years. Some of her family even moved to her ranch in California after she remarried. However, they were instructed to always say they were her adopted family. Jackie apparently wanted to hide from the public the early chapters of her life and was successful in doing so until after her death.

Keenly aware that evolution is essential to survival, Jackie recognized that every person and every experience that touched her life could, and should, change her. And she enjoyed that change, never fearing that she would lose herself. Cochran was always eager to discover the person evolving just below the surface.
At the age of seven Jackie became a mid wife for the pregnant women in the area whose husbands worked at the local factories. She would earn ten cents a day helping the women through their birth and then helped the mother get back on her feet afterwards. She would cook the meals and take care of the babies to give their mother a break. This is where Jackie says she learned to cook along with how to deliver a baby. Jackie ... learned how "not to live your life".
