Jackie Cochran: General Arnold
built 216 days ago
As war approached, Nancy Love and Jackie Cochran became rivals without realizing it. Love gathered information on the most experienced women pilots in the U.S. and suggested that a ferry squadron could be formed if the U.S. joined the war. The Ferry Command was interested, but General Hap Arnold, commander of the Army Air Corps, was unconvinced of the need. In 1942, Nancy and Robert Love both went to work for the Air Transport Command in Washington. Quietly, they promoted the idea of using experienced women pilots to ferry planes.

Since the end of the war Jackie and Floyd became friends with General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Jackie tried to convince Eisenhower to run for the office of the President of the United States. Eisenhower was not interested in running for office at all. Jackie did not stop there. In the early part of 1952, she and her husband helped sponsor a large rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City in support of an Eisenhower presidential candidacy. At the time General Eisenhower was stationed in France and was completely unaware of this function.

At the end of World War Two, the American government gave Jackie Cochran the Distinguished Service Medal for organizing the WASPs. She was the first civilian to receive the honor. After the war, she worked with General Arnold. She helped write a bill that created America's Air Force Reserve. She became the first female member. She was finally a member of the military.

When World War II began, Cochran travelled to England to observe how female pilots were helping the British war effort. She had been contemplating the idea of a fleet of women aviators who could fly military aircraft in support of general operations. The idea was to free up men so they could fight in the war, instead of dealing with such tasks as ferrying military planes and providing basic aerial training. While overseas, Cochran saw that women could effectively take on the more routine tasks of military flight, and she lobbied the U.S. government to create just such an outfit.

Jackie had her supporters and her enemies. She made her enemy’s hate her even more because of how well the WASP preformed. The program was running above expectations. Jackie was proud to hand in a report of all the achievements the WASP’s had accomplished to General Hap Arnold. Jackie hoped that the review would convince Congress to officially bring the WASP into the official Army Air Force.

In 1942, Cochran got her wish. Army Air Force General Henry "Hap" Arnold asked her to organize the Women's Flying Training Detachment (WFTD) to train women pilots to handle basic military flight support. The following year, Cochran received an appointment to lead the Women's Air Force Service Pilots, or WASPs. The WASPs were essentially two groups in one--the WFTD, and another organization called the Women's Auxiliary Ferry Squadron (WAFS), a group responsible for delivering military planes to their base of operations.
