Clune does a good job of reproducing Burchill's accent (disingenuous rustic child), but seems to be concentrating more on that than on forcefully projecting a character or establishing a rapport with the audience. In Jonathan Lloyd's limp production, Clune spends a lot of time clutching a pillow to her stomach or looking winsomely, Diana-style, at the floor.

Clune, director Jonathan Lloyd has the ideal person to play the First Lady of Grub Street. Seven stone lighter and seven years younger than the 42-year-old wit, Clune doesn't necessarily convince as someone who slobs her days away on a leopard-skin sofa, flicking through tabloids but she brings out Burchill's qualities as unbridled jester: able to play to the galleries, whip up collective hilarity or hysteria, but quintessentially a loner.

It didn't hurt that she was to be played by Clune. "As Jackie is attractive in every way, I can't help but be flattered at being portrayed by her," Burchill says. "Obviously if it was Jo Brand I'd be crying in the corner."
