Jack Palance (Oscar) --> Born in Lattimer Mines, PA (outside Hazleton), Jack Palance has been a TV and motion picture actor for more than 40 years. His many film credits include Shane, The Professionals, Batman, and City Slickers, for which he won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1991. Mr. Palance delighted the audience at the Academy Awards that year when he, at age 71, started doing one-handed push-ups onstage. Billy Crystal, the awards host, was totally upstaged and made jokes about it for the rest of the evening.

Vladimir Palaniuk, better known as Jack Palance, passed away from natural causes today, as the Monterey Herald reports. The AP sites his age at 85, although his family has said his age was 87. Regardless, Palance had an air of immortality. Everyone loved when he dropped down and did one-armed pushups at the Academy Awards. And it wasn't the last time he did them. Well into his 80s, Palance showed everyone his health and strength behind the worn skin and warm smile.

Joan Crawford and Jack Palance Jack Palance stars as the mild-mannered scientist whose experiments in the nature of human evil unleash his brutish dark side and soon begin to control his life. With Oskar Homolka, Billie Whitelaw, Denholm Elliott. 120 min. Standard; Soundtrack: English; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish.
As much as any other actor, the career of Jack Palance has been determined by his physical appearance. His taut-skinned and somewhat Asian features and the legacy of his Slavic background were rendered even more distinctive by the severe burns and resulting plastic surgery he endured after the crash of a bomber he was piloting during World War II. His resulting look never would allow him to be cast as a romantic hero. In short, Palance seemed destined to be typecast as a sadistic heavy.
Around Hollywood, Jack Palance is known as the guy who never watches his own movies. But an advance copy of Panic in the Streets, one of three film noir classics out on DVD Tuesday, found its way into Palance's DVD player. "I'm just enjoying the fact that it's coming out," he says.
