Jack Holt: Tim Holt
built 618 days ago
The first Holt tree spade was designed and built by Jack Holt in 1957. At this timeJack was digging trees by hand with 3 helpers. They would use 4 hand spadeshovels, each man would push his shovel in the ground to form a cone, and thenthey would lift the 12" diameter root ball out of the ground. After many calluses andtired backs Jack got the idea to build some sort of frame work out of flat bar, thiswould keep the root ball in one shape and size. This was the first Holt tree spade.
