The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters (BACS) held its annual award show, The Ivor Novello Awards, in London on May 24, 2007. Now in its 52nd year, the ceremony is considered by many to be the pinnacle of UK award ceremonies. BACS chairman, David Ferguson, was on hand to guide the day's events and “pay respect to the craft of the songwriter and composer, whose work is the heartbeat of the music industry.” Quincy Jones was given the Special International Award and was there in person to collect his honor, as were Stuart Price, Alex Turner, Yusuf Islam, Scott Matthews, Norman Cook and The Scissor Sisters. The Ivor Novello Awards is sponsored by the UK performing right society, PRS. ASCAP is proud to represent, either directly or via PRS, the winners listed below:

Lyrical legend HAL DAVID has just become the first non-Briton to be honoured with a prestigious Ivor Novello Award by the British Academy Of Composers And Songwriters for his string of landmark hits with easy listening icon Burt Bacharach. TERRY STAUNTON said a little prayer and went to meet one of the greatest backroom boys in pop history.

Since 1955, members of the “British Academy of Composers and Songwriters” have annually selected recipients of the prestigious Ivor Novello award honoring songwriting and composing excellence. The American award equivalent would be the Grammy category for “Song of the Year” and was presented to John in 1968.

Amy Winehouse won the Ivor Novello award for Best Contemporary Song, with her UK top 10 hit Rehab from the album Back In Black. The song helped Winehouse’s second album reach the top of the charts in the UK, as well as a debut in the top 10 in the US earlier this year.

Over the course of her career she has released eight albums, earning three Grammy nominations and was recognized with an Ivor Novello Award for "Outstanding Contribution to British Music" in 2002. She has previously had songs featured in the films Castaway and She's Having a Baby.

Apart for this recognition, Damon Albarn and Jaime Hewlett were ... awarded the Ivor Novello prize as the “Composer of the Year”; for their prominent work in the virtuous band “Gorillaz”. Coldplay could not unfortunately obtain any prize despite of having being nominated in three categories.
