From Oct. 29, 1918, the date of the armistice with Austria-Hungary, to Oct. 28, 1922, when Benito Mussolini came to power, events in Italy were confused and demoralizing. Coupled with this was the failure to achieve marked success abroad. Popular indignation ran especially high over the attitude of the Allies toward Italian claims to Istria and Dalmatia. The seizure of Fiume in September 1919 by Gabriele D'Annunzio, at the head of 2,000 volunteers, brought the nation to a high pitch of excitement, and the subsequent expulsion of his troops by the Italian government turned many of the disillusioned into active malcontents. Contrary to earlier promises, the peace treaties did not give Italy any share in the spoils of Turkey and of the German colonial empire. Trentino and Trieste had been acquired, and the new Italian frontiers actually included some territories that contained more Germans and Slavs than Italians.
The Colosseum in Rome, perhaps the most enduring symbol of Italy After several defeats, Italy was invaded in June 1943. King Vittorio Emanuele and a group of fascists set themselves against Mussolini. In July 1943, Mussolini was arrested. As the old pre-Fascist political parties resurfaced, secret peace negotiations with the Allies were started. In September 1943, Italy surrendered. Immediately Germany invaded the country and Italy was divided for almost two years and became a battlefield.
Italy ... has several active volcanoes generating geothermal events. Mt. Etna, on the eastern tip of the island of Sicily, has been erupting intermittently since 2000. Mt. Vesuvius, located near Naples, is currently capped and not active. Activity at Mt. Vesuvius is monitored by an active seismic network and sensor system, and no recent seismic activity has been recorded. Two of Italy's smaller islands, Stromboli and Vulcano in the Aeolian Island chain north of Sicily, also have active volcanoes with lava flows. Detailed information on volcano activity in Italy is available from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at http://www.usgs.gov.
Italy is a signatory to the 1997 OECD Convention on Combating Bribery, ratified in September 2000. Italy has signed, but not ratified, the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which was adopted in 2003 and came into force on December 14, 2005.

Italy and the large islands of Sicily and Sardinia have very changeable weather in autumn, winter, and spring in marked contrast to the settled sunny weather of summer. Disturbed weather can continue into late May and may commence any time after early September. Throughout the winter... cloudy rainy days alternate with spells of mild, sunny weather.

The Fascist government abolished in Italy every safeguard of the individual and every liberty. No free man can live in Italy, and an immoral law prevents Italians from going to a foreign country on pain of punishment. Italy is a prison where life has become intolerable. Everything is artificial - artificial finance - artificial exchange - artificial public economy - artificial order - artificial calm.
