Tropea, on the Calabrian coast of Italy, is the ideal departure point to visit southern Italy, Sicily or the magical Aeolian Islands, only 30 miles away. Successfully preserving its 16th century features, Tropea offers both historical and architectural delights. The new Sunsail base is located in the main marina, just an hour from the international airport.

With the Franks and Germans coming and going, and Romania never far away, southern Italy was a busy place for the next couple of centuries, but without radical changes. The old balance of power was finally upset with the arrival of the Normans. In short order, all of southern Italy was in their hands, and the line of Lombards in Benevento finally fell to history. The Normans... did not hold Benevento all that long. It became an outlying Papal possession in 1139 and remained so until Napoleon arrived in 1806.

The independent state of Italy emerged from a long nationalist struggle for unification that started with the revolution of 1848. The southern kingdoms of Sardinia and Sicily joined in 1866 and by 1914 only the Vatican and San Marino retained independence within Italy. However, a large Italian population remained within Austria-Hungary in the Trentino and Trieste regions.
Bettino Craxi, viewed by many as the symbol of Tangentopoli, leader of the Italian Socialist Party, is greeted by a salvo of coins as a sign of loathing by protesters Excavations throughout Italy reveal human presence dating back to the Palaeolithic period (the "Old Stone Age") some 200,000 years ago. In the 8th and 7th centuries BC, driven by unsettled conditions at home, Greek colonies were established in places as widely separated as the eastern coast of the Black Sea and Massilia (what is now Marseille, France). They included settlements in Sicily and the southern part of the Italian Peninsula. The Romans called the area of Sicily and the foot of the boot of Italy Magna Graecia (Latin, “Greater Greece”), since it was so densely inhabited by Greeks.[6][7][8]
Italy, officially the Italian Republic or Repubblica Italiana, is a Southern European country. It comprises the Po River valley, the Italian Peninsula and the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. It is shaped like a boot and for this reason Italians commonly call it [L]o Stivale ("the boot") or, due to its prevalent peninsular geographical nature, la Penisola ("the Peninsula"). [1]
