A vital part in Italy's culture is its revolutionary education system. From the age of 3, each Italian boy or girl goes to "Cleaning School". There they learn how to clean floors or toilets. Common subjects are general cleanology, floor shrugging, kitchen cleaning, cleaning theory; there are an endless number of choices available. During their leisure time, most children play cleaning games on their computers or they keep their rooms tidy. One remarkable feature of the Italian calculators is that there is a "Clean" button which actually calculates how much soap has to be used to clean a certain area. In order to solve these extremely advanced equations, the Italian calulators have about 10 terahertz CPUs and 512 GB RAM.

The Renaissance reached its peak in the late 15th cent. Meanwhile, Italy's political independence was threatened by the growing nations of France, Spain, and Austria. Quarrels among Italian states invited foreign intervention. The invasion (1494) of Italy by Charles VIII of France marked the beginning of the Italian Wars, which ended in 1559 with most of Italy subjected to Spanish rule or influence. Early in the wars, in which France and Spain were the main contenders for supremacy in Italy, several Italian statesmen, notably Machiavelli, came to the belief that only unity could save Italy from foreign domination. Pope Julius II consolidated the Papal States, but his Holy League, devised (1510) to drive out the French, failed to create a wider Italian unity.

Christmas, as it is celebrated in Italy, has two origins: the familiar traditions of Christianity blended with the pagan traditions predating the Christmas era. The greatest feast of the ancient Roman Empire, "Saturnalia" (a winter solstice celebration), just happens to coincide with the Christmas celebrations of the Advent. Consequently, Christmas fairs, merry-making and torch processions, honor not only the birth of Christ, but ... the birth of the "Unconquered Sun." "Natale," the Italian word for Christmas, is literally the translation for "birthday."

Italy faced political instability in the 1970s, which ended in the 1980s. Known as the Years of Lead, this period was characterised by widespread social conflicts and terrorist acts carried out by extra-parliamentary movements. The assassination of the leader of the Christian Democracy (DC), Aldo Moro, led to the end of a "historic compromise" between the DC and the Communist Party (PCI). In the 1980s, for the first time, two governments were managed by a republican and a socialist (Bettino Craxi) rather than by a member of DC.
