Italy has a long history of welcoming foreign students. The School in Italy offers two sites from which to choose depending on the type of environment the student is seeking. Students who choose to study in the provincial city of Ferrara will have little interaction with other Americans or tourists, while students studying in Florence will have a more international experience.

The western coast of Italy is broken up by bays, gulfs, and other indentations, which provide a number of natural anchorages. In the northwest is the Gulf of Genoa, the harbor of the important commercial city of Genoa. Naples, another leading western coast port, is situated on the beautiful Bay of Naples, dominated by the volcano Mount Vesuvius. A little farther south is the Gulf of Salerno, at the head of which stands the port of Salerno. The southeastern end of the peninsula is deeply indented by the Gulf of Taranto, which divides the so-called heel of Italy (ancient Calabria) from the toe (modern Calabria). The Apennine range continues beneath the narrow Strait of Messina and traverses the island of Sicily, where the volcano Mount Etna is located.

Naples is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. It has a great bay with nice views of the Capri and the Ischia Islands. Not far from Naples there are two more reasons to come to this city: Pompeii and Herculaneum. These two cities were buried by Mont Vesuvius' eruption in 79 AD.

The 12th edition of the "Index of Economic Freedom" published by the Wall Street Journal and Heritage Foundation gave Italy a 3 on a 1 – 5 scale for its regulatory environment. It cited red tape and regulations that vary from region to region and are inefficiently implemented as contributing to a non-transparent system.

Padua is one of the cultural and economic centers in the Northeast of Italy. Padua is a pilgrimage city, millions of pilgrims come here every year to visit the "Basilica di Sant'Antonio", where the grave of "Sant'Antonio" is preserved.
